A Parent's Guide to Accelerated Reader

Practice Quiz Tracking Form

Dear Families,

The Accelerated Reader incentive program, sponsored by the Media Center, for this year has been designed to encourage all students to participate.  Goal levels are based on 20 minutes of daily reading. The point system and goal levels for the program are as follows:

Reading practice goals are as follows:

Class Quarter 1 Goal
(Due date October 17th)
Quarter 2 Goal
(Due date January 7th)
Quarter 3 Goal
(Due date March 13th)
Quarter 4 Goal
(Due date May 24th)
Kindergarten Begins in January Begins in January 4 points 4 points

Eighth* 25 Points TBD Points TBD points TBD points

*Goals met count as a class work or test grade for Language Arts subject depending on the teacher's preference. Points are based on 20-30 minutes of reading a day, over an eight week period.

Students may take Accelerated Reader quizzes every morning in the library from 7:30a.m. to 7:50a.m. in the library.

Students who meet the goal for two of the four quarters are invited to a Snow Cone Party in May.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for each class and school-wide finishers will also be awarded, so don't stop reading!!

Kindergarten, first and second grade books generally are worth 0.5 points. So to earn 1 point the child needs to successfully pass 2 quizzes.

In conclusion, my philosophy is that students should enjoy visiting the library and checking out books they like, but they should also be checking out books that are on their level and help with their reading skills. That is why I encourage younger children to check out at least one “dot book,” (an AR book) using the “Fiver Finger Rule”. The “Five Finger Rule” was taught at the beginning of the school and is something the students use when they are unsure a book may or may not be challenging enough. Please email me if you have any questions.

The dot system is as follows:
Dark green Kindergarten/First
Yellow Second
Red Third
Blue Fourth
Orange Fifth
Light Green Middle School

Thank you for your support and cooperation,
